Polyandry is a form of polygamy (meaning multiple mates) in which a female mates with multiple males. It is considered very rare in nature. Spotted sandpipers are polyandrous. Females mate with multiple males and the males take care of the offspring. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology has some great information on these neat birds.
