Environmental scientists ask questions about pollution, climate change, human population numbers, natural resources, and so forth. They may work to model how arctic sea ice is changing in response to climate change or how to support growing populations in cities without increasing the amount of land needed for agriculture. They may study how to treat wastewater or study if a local factory is polluting groundwater.

Environmental scientists may work in universities, for nonprofit organizations, for consulting firms, for the government, and so forth. They may spend their time outdoors or they may spend their time in front of a computer, in a lab, working with local communities, or elsewhere.
