Explanation:

Ionic bonding is the result of opposite charges of ions being attracted to each other to form extremely strong bonds. Ionic bonding I would say is strong, if not stronger than most covalent bonds.

It happens when a cation (positively-charged ion), bonds with an anion (negatively-charged ion). This is due to their opposite charges. This is most common between a metal and a non-metal, due to their tendencies to become cations and anions, respectively.

In even a single gram of an ionic compound, let's take sodium chloride #(NaCl)# for example, there will be lots and lots of sodium and chlorine ions arranged in a lattice structure.
