Explanation:
During hypothesis testing, the test statistic is evaluated to see if it lies outside the status quo .
For example, if the typical average grade in Statistics 101 is 75 and the test statistic is 88, does this statistic lie outside the status quo or in other words within the critical area ?
If the test statistic does in fact lie within the critical area , it is considered statistically significant . This suggests that the null hypothesis (a score of 75 in this example) should be rejected and is no longer the status quo!
