It is another method of displaying data like a stem and leaf diagram, pie chart or bar chart.
You only use 5 pieces of data, the lowest and highest values, the median( $L_{2}$ $L_2$ ) value and then the lower quartile( $L_{1}$ $L_1$ ) and the upper quartile ( $L_{3}$ $L_3$ ).
The beauty of a box plot is that it splits the data up into quarters. Between the lowest score and $L_{1}$ $L_1$ is a quarter of the data. Between $L_{1}$ $L_1$ and $L_{2}$ $L_2$ there is a quarter of the data.
Between $L_{2}$ $L_2$ and $L_{3}$ $L_3$ there is a quarter of the data.
Between $L_{3}$ $L_3$ and the highest score there is a quarter of the data.
