Mendel's experiments involved crossing a pure breeding tall pea plant with pure breeding dwarf pea plant. The sequence of steps in this mono-hybrid cross are explained below.

Explanation:

Mendel's experiments involved crossing a pure breeding (homozygous) tall pea plant with pure breeding (homozygous) dwarf pea plant.

Either of the plant is taken as male and the other as female.
Let us take Pure tall pea plant as female and pure dwarf pea plant as male.

Flowers of pure tall plants are emasculanated , i.e. the stamens from the young flowers are removed and these are covered with polythene bags to avoid uncontrolled pollination. These flowers now have only pistil (female) part of the flower.

The flowers of pure dwarf plant taken as male are also covered with polythene bags so that any undesired pollen may not fall on the stamens.

The stamens of flowers of dwarf plant (taken as male) are plucked when the anthers are mature. The anthers are dusted upon the stigma of flowers of tall plant taken as female and immediately covered with polythene bags to avoid any undesired pollen falling on stigma.

The seeds thus formed on pure tall plant are sown to get plants, which constitute F 1 generation.

All plants produced as a result of this cross are isolated and allowed to interbreed freely among themselves. The seeds produced will germinate to produce F 2 generation.
