Calcium is stored in the connective tissue that forms the base of the bone. This calcium makes the bone rigid.

Explanation:

When a human is born, the bones are mainly made of a connective tissue with a little amount of calcium in it.
As this human grows, the tissue grows as well and calcium starts depositing in separate areas gradually, with some areas left without much calcium. These ares will be responsible for the elongation of the bones during puberty.
