Humoral immunity is immunity provided by body fluids. This is achieved by presence of antibody molecules in plasma of blood and lymph, in extracellular tissue fluid, etc.

Y shaped antibody molecules, the immunoglobulins , are secreted by B cells and its clones i.e. plasma cells. Humoral immunity is thus also termed as antibody mediated immunity.

Antibody molecules are gamma globulins, five types are recognised:
Ig A,
Ig D,
Ig E,
Ig G and
Ig M.

  1. Ig G is most abundant in body fluids and it helps in prventing infections against which we are already immunised, either naturally (if we have already suffered from the infection in childhood such as pox/measles/mumps) or through vaccination (such as diphtheria, tetanus).

  2. Ig A is secreted with mother's milk, hence provides immunity to a newborn.
