The Great Depression that took place in the thirties was the most severe economic crisis the country had ever known. The USA had been renowned fro being a land of plenty where individual enterprize could lead to prosperity through hard labor(the American Dream). Over 25% of the population was jobless and the vast majority of the population lived under the poverty line. People travelled on road in order to find work.
