The New Deal strengthened the role of government in the economy, traditionaly government was seen as a threat to individual liberties. In the Sixities the Welfare State increased as well. During the Cold War, the opposition to the Soviet Union served as a pretext to make the federal government bigger and a military industrial complex emerged. The end of the Cold War did not change the situation and after 9/11 under presidents Bush and Obama the federal government saw its size swollen to an extent unprecedented.
