It is thought that a mantle hot spot has been sitting in the middle of the Pacific Ocean for 5 million years now. As the Pacific Plate moves Northwestward, it drifts over this hotspot and a volcano pops through every million years or so. Some scientists think the hotspot may in fact be moving too.
