Explanation:

By definition, #pH=-log_10[H_3O^+]#...

And thus when a base is added to acid solution....#[H_3O^+]# DECREASES...

#H_3O^+ + HO^(-) rarr H_2O#

And if #[H_3O^+]# DECREASES, would not #pH# increase...?
