The protandrous condition, in which the male reproductive organs mature first, occurs in the younger, immature proglottids. As newer proglottids develop from the neck region, the protandrous proglottids get moved closer to the middle region of the tapeworm, during which time they mature. The mature proglottids contain both male and female reproductive organs side by side. The mature proglottids can then self-fertilize or cross-fertilize with other mature proglottids.
