How does refraction affect what we see?

Since, the velocity of light is different in different media, it bends from it's path when moving from one medium to another.
Finally, what happens is that, after bending, the light ray enters the eye of the person, the human eye is not able to detect the bending of the ray and as a result a virtual image is formed due to which the object in another medium or behind another medium appears displaced from it's original place.
