By bending it and so changing its direction.

Explanation:

Refraction normally occurs at the interface between two media with different refractive index, #n# (say, air and water). This index gives us the change in velocity (slowing down) of light in a spacific medium. Light travelling in air, for example, slows down entering at a certai angle into water and so changes direction:
