Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution specifies the velocities (and hence, kinetic energy) of gaseous particles in a closed system at a given temperature in terms of its statistical distribution.

Explanation:

Ideal gas particles moving in a closed system at a particular temperature can have a particular velocity (which contributes to its kinetic energy). But there are a number of particles which can move at various different velocities. Hence, a mathematical equation that utilizes statistical treatment is required to cater for all particles in the system. Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution uses Gaussian function for that purpose.
