Two fractions being equal you use the cross-product:

$ifa/b=c/d->a*d=b*c$

$->24*(y+2)=5*9$
$->24y+48=45$
$->24y=-3$

$y=-3/24=-1/8$

There are no extraneous solutions, as the only "condition" is $y!=-2$ , as otherwise the numerator of the right fraction $=0$
