Factor.

#4/((x - 2)(x + 1)) + 40/((x - 3)(x + 1)) = (x + 44)/((x - 2)(x+ 1))#

Place on a common denominator.

#(4(x - 3))/((x - 2)(x + 1)(x - 3)) + (40(x - 2))/((x - 3)(x + 1)(x - 2)) = ((x + 44)(x - 3))/((x - 2)(x - 3)(x + 1))#

#4x - 12 + 40x - 80 = x^2 + 44x - 3x - 132#

#0 = x^2 - 3x - 40#

#0 = (x - 8)(x + 5)#

#x = 8 and -5#

Neither of these solutions are extraneous, because neither render the equation undefined.
