First of all you can have the absolute value on one side and the rest of the numbers on the other:

#2|x-3|-5=9#

#2|x-3|=9+5#

#2|x-3|=14#

#|x-3|=7#

Then, you can remove the absolute value using the #\pm#

#x-3=\pm7#

#x=\pm7+3#

Then the equation is valid for

#x=7+3=10#

and

#x=-7+3=-4#.
