LIst all of the factors of 12 and 18. Then find the unique factors and multiple them.

the factors of 12 are $2 \times 2 \times 3$ $2 xx 2 xx 3$ or $2^{2} \times 3$ $2^2 xx 3$

the factors of 18 are $2 \times 3 \times 3$ $2 xx 3 xx 3$ or $2 \times 3^{2}$ $2 xx 3^2$

There are two 2's in 12 and one 2 in 18 so the GCF must have one 2's

There are two 3's in 18 and one 3 in 12 so the GCF must have one 3's

So the GCG is $2 \times 3$ $2 xx 3$ =6
