Explanation:

Electronegativity is defined as the ability of an atom involved in a chemical bond to polarize electron density towards itself. There are various scales, of which the Pauling Scale was the earliest and is still the most widely used.

Pauling originally used atomic properties to define his scale; i.e. he used parameters such as ionization enthalpies, and electron affinities, which were combined and then normalized to give small values from #0# to #4#.
