Psychosis is a severe mental disorder in which thought and emotions are so impaired that contact is lost with external reality. Psychosis can be brought on by any type of traumatic experience and can also be associated as a mania symptom in type I Bipolar disorder and in schizophrenia. Psychosis is usually best treatable in a inpatient, hospitalized setting as an intervention to assess therapy and med management. Psychosis is best treated with anti-psychotics that antagonize Dopamine and Serotonin receptors to stabilize the individual. Examples of anti-psychotics would be chlorpromazine (Thorazine), haloperidol (Haldol), ziprasidone (Geodon), Lurasidone (Latuda), and many more.
