# How do logarithmic functions work?

Nov 1, 2014

Definition

${\log}_{b} x = y$ if and only if ${b}^{y} = x$

Logarithmic functions are the inverse of the exponential functions with the same bases.

Example

If you wan to find the value of

log_2 8=?,

then convert the question in terms of exponential function

2^{?}=8=2^3 => ?=3.

Hence, ${\log}_{2} 8 = 3$.

I hope that this was helpful.
