In a susbtituion reaction an atom or a group of atoms will be repalced with other reagents in a reaction mixture, where as in a elimination reaction an atom or a group of atoms will be lost from the reaction mixture.
Explanation:
In a nucleophilic substitution reaction, a nucleophile will replace an atom or a molecule in a reactant forming a new product, in case of elimination reaction, a molecule or an atom will be lost during the formation of the products.
