How do crocodiles differ from alligators?

Crocodiles and alligators are in different families. A family is a group used in scientific classification. Crocodiles are in the family Crocodylidae and alligators are Alligatoridae. The two split from each other approximately 90 million years ago!

Crocodiles are more tolerant to seawater and they are generally thought to be more aggressive than alligators.
The easiest way to tell apart Crocodiles and alligators is looking at their jaw. A crocodile has a "V" shaped snout or jaw whereas an alligator resembles a "U."
