Often with little fanfare and occasional ridicule from some of the general public. The uncaring public and government made many veterans feel isolated except with other Vietnam veterans.
Explanation:
Many veterans had problems adjusting to coming home from Vietnam. There was often a lack of a decompression period to help them adjust. Public distrust or disinterest or lack of respect embittered many veterans in contrast to the support the country gave to World War 2 veterans. Drug and/or alcohol addiction in the field often lead to addiction at home.
It was a failure that weighed heavily on the US Armed Forces for many years.
