How can a galvanic cell go dead?

Voltaic (e.g. galvanic) cells are spontaneous reduction-oxidization reactions.
If the chemical source of the electrical energy is completely discharged, then the cell is "dead".
To be sure, if the substance being oxidized by and large "runs out" than there isn't a significant amount of electrical energy to supply the reduction of the other substance.
