If the metal is an alkali metal or alkaline earth its name is the same.
Many transition metals or metals from group 13 or 14 can have more than one oxidation state. Most chemists use the Stock system to name metals in an ionic compound which have more than one oxidation state. Older chemistry material might use a system of Latin names to indicate the oxidation state of the metal.
