By definition, the mean or average of a set of n data points is given by

$¯ x = \frac{1}{n} n \sum I = 1 x_{i}$ $bar x =1/nsum_(I=1)^n x_i$

Therefore in this particular case we get :

$1 = \frac{1}{5} (1 + 1 + 1 - 5 + x)$ $1=1/5(1+1+1-5+x)$

$therefore x=7$
