Explanation:

Even with the naked eye you can make out the centre of the Andromeda galaxy (approximately #2.5# million light years away) as a fuzzy patch of light. The whole Andromeda galaxy subtends about #3^@ xx 1^@#, i.e. it is about #6# times the apparent width of the sun or moon.

With the aid of ground based telescopes we can observe many galaxies in some detail.
