I think the easiest way to do this is by using proportions.

In this case, $55$ is the original and $34$ is part of $55$ , so $55$ would be $100%$ and $34$ would be $x%$ .

$(55/100)$ = $(34/x)$

Using cross multiplication you get:

$55x = 3400$

$11x = 680$

$x = 680/11$

So $34$ is $680/11%$ of $55$ .
