Why are mitochondria important?
1 Answer
The mitochondria are important as the fact that these organelles supply all the necessary biological energy of the cell - ATP, through respiration and to regulate cellular metabolism.
Explanation:
Energy of the cell is got from the enzymatic oxidation of the chemical compounds in the mitochondria. Hence the mitochondria are referred to as the power houses of the cells.
Functions of the the mitochondria depend on the cell type in which they are present.
1) the most important function of the mitochondria is to produce energy through the process of oxidative phosphorylation.
2) they help to maintain proper concentration of calcium ions within the compartment of the cell.
3) they help in building certain parts of blood and hormones (testosterone and esterogens)
4) mitochondria present in the liver have enzymes that detoxify ammonia
5) they play an important role in apoptosis.
