What are mitochondria?

1 Answer

Mitochondria are site of oxidative phosphorylation, i.e. production of ATPs utilizing energy liberated in exothermic chemical reactions.

Explanation:

Mitochondria are cell organelle concerned with cellular respiration.

Cellular respiration occurs in #2# steps; for example, Glycolysis and Kreb's Cycle or Citric Acid Cycle. Glycolysis occurs in cytoplasm, where as Kreb's cycle occurs in mitochondria.

The energy released during various reactions of Kreb's cycle is utilized in conversion of ADP molecules into ATP molecules in presence of enzyme ATPase.

The synthesis of ATPs, utilizing energy released in various oxidative reactions of Kreb's cycle, is termed Oxidative Phosphorylation.
