Variation is a condition to adaptive evolution because it provides a variety of phenotypes that can be selected to best fit the environment.

Explanation:

There are many examples of adaptive evolution.
1. The famous moths of England. Normally these moths are mainly white with a small number of dark moths. During the industrial revolution the dark moths became dominate. The dark moths were better adapted to the environmental condition of the early industrial revolution. After coal use was reduced the environmental conditions changed back to where the white moths were again favored. Adaptive evolution is seen as the change from white to black and back to white.

  1. Darwin's finches show the adaptive evolution of beaks changing from thick to thin and back to thick according to the changing environment.

Variation is necessary for adaptive evolution.

Variation is not sufficient for Neo Darwinian evolution. Accidental Mutations are required for Neo Darwinian evolution.
