Upton Sinclair is most well known for being a muckraker, or an "investigative journalist" during the Progressive Era in the late nineteenth century into the early twentieth century.
His most famous novel was The Jungle, which criticized disgusting and highly unsanitary conditions in the meatpacking industry.
The outrage his book caused contributed largely to the passage of the 1906 Pure Food and Drug Act and the 1907 Meat Inspection Act, which checked corporate powers and the capitalist society.
