Varies directly means that it is proportional: $A = kB$ where $k$ is the constant of proportionality.

$x = ky$

Solve for $k$ :

$8 = k * 24$ so $k = 8/24 = 1/3$

So when $y = 6$ : $x = 1/3 * 6 = 2$

You can also solve this problem using proportions without a $k$ :
$x_1/y_1 = x_2/y_2$ ; $8/24 = x_2/6$

Using the cross product $x_1 * y_2 = x_2* y_1$

$24x_2 = 48$

So $x_2 = 48/24 = 2$
