The Declaration of the Rights of Man of 1789 was patterned after the American Declaration of Independence. The article was introduced by General Layeffete who wrote it with the help of Thomas Jefferson.

The Declaration of the Rights of Man was based on the same enlightenment philosophies as the Declaration of Independence. It stated the all men ( it didn't apply to women) had secular natural rights that were not dependent on the actions of governments. These rights included the right to life, property and elected government.

The Declaration of the Rights of Man were the basis of the French constitutions of the Fourth and Fifth Republics. The fraternity part was that people had the right to vote and have an elected representative government.
