You'll have to look at your exact problem for that, it could go either way.
Explanation:
The independent variable is the one you can choose the value for. The dependent variable is what answer your function will give based on the value that you input.
So, if you give a volume and get a height, the volume is the independent variable and height is the dependent. If you give height and get a volume, then it's reversed.
