We know for the grating that:

d sin theta = n lambdadsinθ=nλ, see below for meaning of terms in this equation.

For constant slit width dd and looking just at the first maximum at n = 1n=1, we see that for angle theta θ to normal:

theta = arcsin( lambda/d)θ=arcsin(λd)

If we use the following wavelengths, ie lambdaλ's, as being indicative:

  • lambda_(red) = 650 nmλred=650nm

  • lambda_(blue) = 475 nmλblue=475nm

.... then it follows that angle theta_(red) θred should be greater than angle theta_(blue) θblue.
