Adam Smith saw money and wealth as being necessary components of capitalism aimed at assuring prosperity and the greatest good for the greatest number(Utilitarism). His theory was called "the Invisible Hand" of the market which assures the best for society through the mechanism of the law of supply and demand.

Marx on the other hand, sought to get rid of both money and wealth in order to create an equal society i.e a classless society. Money was seen by him as a source of alienation and oppression for mankind. The Bourgeoisie exploited the Proleariat because of their owning production means. Salaried workers had to sell their labor force in order to survive.
