Amino acids are monomers of protein. Many amino acids join one after another by peptide bonds to form a polypeptide chain. Two amino acids may form disulfide bond (S-S) between them to enhance the protein structure.

There are twenty amino acids which are used for protein translation in living cells. Each amino acid has a carboxyl group and an amino group.

Carboxyl group of one amino acid reacts with amino group of another amino acid ( dehydration synthesis reaction) to form peptide bond.
