Imagine a three-C propane chain, with two C-branches attached to one end.

Then the longest chain - necessary for naming - would not have a length of 3, but 4. And the other methyl would be attached to the second C of that 4-length (=butane) chain.
The IUPAC-name is 2-methyl butane.
(the older name would be iso-pentane, or i-pentane)
