The escape velocity is simply defined as the lowest speed which an object must have to be able to escape the gravitational field of a planet (or an object)

For a planet (or any spherical object) if mass m, radius r, the escape velocity is given by the relation,

v=2mGr

For the earth, the escape velocity is about 11.2 km/s.
