Oxidation occurs when electrons are taken away from a particle.
Explanation:
Many chemical reactions that involve oxidation. While some particles involved in the reaction have electrons taken away (oxidation) other particles grab those electrons (reduction).
The particles which grab their electrons have their charges decrease - It's called reduction because the addition of electrons lowers (reduces) the charge of the particle.
In this video the reaction shown & analyzed involves an oxidation-reduction reaction (redox reaction ) that takes place when copper wire is placed into an aqueous solution of silver nitrate. It's a pretty cool reaction!
