A precipitate will not let light pass through it.
Explanation:
Hence keeping the reaction vessel in front of a light source such that the path of light is through it, can help us identify the precipitate and also to differentiate between a solution and a precipitate, a solution will let light pass through it while a precipitate will block the path of light. Hence it will appear translucent to opaque depending on the reaction. Hope it helps :)
