Cells need chemicals to drive processes like glycolosis or ATP synthesis. They need room, as overcrowding affects the amount of chemicals available and also limits room to divide. They need a certain range of temperature to stop from rupturing.
They also need to be kept in media, specifically one that they are isotonic to. Meaning osmosis won't cause them to shrivel or explode.
