Nerve cell or the neuron can divide only during the embryonic stages.

Cell division is absent in the neurons once the organism is born. Dead neurons can not be replaced. This is the reason for the diseases like polio to be permanent. Neurons lack the ability to divide due to the absence of centromere in their cells
