The Church had Power over the state.

Explanation:

The Christian church had secular authority, which was papal supremacy. education and hospitals for everyone were run by the church. The corruption was when the monks were using church money for non-religious things. The reform was when all leaders( secular+religious) should be able to make their own decisions. The end of the corruption went back to the Benedictine rule.

There was no division between Church and State, which meant that the Pope had more power than anyone else. Local priests could convince anyone to spend money if they send it was related to the church. This eventually led to the selling of indulgences. This ultimate power led to corruption, which led to America separating religious affairs from the affairs of the government.
