A preposition is a word governing, and usually preceding, a noun or pronoun and expressing a relation to another word or element in the clause.

Explanation:

To make the above dictionary definition easy...

It's simply a word or phrase that connects a noun or pronoun to a verb or adjective in a sentence. It's basically the glue connecting two ideas.

subject+verb+adjective ---preposition---subject+verb+adjective

We went to the park after we finished our homework.

OR

subject+verb+adjective ---preposition---adjective

The dog dug a whole underneath the swing.

OR

subject+verb+adjective ---preposition---verb/adjective

The boy found the goggles before swimming.

Prepositions can also be used in a question:

What do you use the icing for ?

You can also have two prepositions in one sentence:

Instead of studying for the test, the students hiked up the trail.

Before making smores, Jake likes to melt the chocolate on the cracker.

Hope this helps!
