They can be made to have specific properties, which can be beneficial for production or consumption.
Explanation:
Disadvantages are that using them results in a low-diversity system, and if the specific genes are spread, it can result in other crops having it. If the gene in question makes the plant resistant against insects, the spread of those genes would result in those plants thriving and insects having a harder time. It simply messes with the whole ecosystem.
Advantages are that you can design the crop in a way beneficial for your purposes. Maybe you want it more resistant to cold for example, or maybe you want it to have a higher yield. Higher nutrient crops are an example which would be great to combat starvation for example.
